Quick recipe in a quick post, this week folks.
I love gyoza, but I cannot get the wrappers locally, and even if I could, it takes too long for me to make them. I can buy approximations of gyoza – frozen and stuffed with chemistry and carbs. So, I have a remedy. The Japanese would hate it, but I get to satiate my cravings and not feel guilty. The secret is low-carb healthy tortillas. They absolutely do not act as a replacement for soft, gooey or light and crispy gyoza skins, but they aren’t bad. In addition, just switch fillings for healthy pastries!
Ingredients
- 3 cups trimmed and finely chopped green cabbage (about 8 ounces)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 cups green onions (Use the whole thing)
- 1 tablespoon finely chopped garlic (about 2 cloves)
- 1 tablespoon finely chopped ginger (about 1 ounce ginger, peeled)
- 2/3 pound ground pork
- 2 teaspoons soy sauce
- 4 tablespoons toasted sesame oil
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- Flour tortillas
Mix all ingredients in a large bowl.
Brush edge of the tortilla with beaten egg and place stuffing in one half of the tortilla and fold.
I have a set of pastry folders. At one time in my life, they would have been purchased to make fried pies. Now, however, I make healthy tortillas into pasties and giant gyoza!
Brush the tops with the beaten egg-wash to produce a glowing sheen once baked. Place in a 375 oven for 30-45 minutes.
Serve with your choice of sauces. This was oyster sauce – an Asian answer to ketchup. Enjoy!
