I’ve known about this recipe for so many years, but I’ve just now gotten around to making it.
I first had this cake maybe about 10 years ago at a gathering of friends. One couple there are total foodies, and, they had brought, among other things, this cake to share with the rest of the group. I’m glad they did!
Let me tell you, it is crazy-good and really really sweet. Don’t let that put you off, though. It’s definitely worth the minimal effort it takes to make this.
What you’ll need:
- 1 (18.25-ounce) package of yellow cake mix
- 0.5 cups (1 stick) butter, melted
- 4 large eggs, divided
- 2t vanilla extract, divided
- 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
- 4 cups confectioners’ sugar
What to do:
Begin heating the oven to 350 degrees F.
Meanwhile, on a large bowl, mix the cake mix, butter, 2 eggs, and 1t vanilla until well-combined. Pat the mixture into a 9 x 13-inch cake pan.
For the gooey topping, in a large bowl and with an electric mixer, beat the cream cheese, 2 remaining eggs, and the remaining 1t vanilla. Gradually beat in the confectioner’s sugar. After everything is blended, pour the mixture over the cake layer and even it out by tapping the pan on the counter top.
Bake in the heated oven until golden brown—about 40 to 45 minutes.
Let it cool, or even chill it, before serving.

Cool! And you and Mike were the “one couple” I mentioned in the write-up who are “total foodies.” It took me soooo loooong to get around to making it!
